Pensacola Blue Wahoos welcome new service dog in training, Diamond!
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos have joyfully welcomed their newest team member, an 8-week-old service dog puppy named Diamond, who arrived in Pensacola on Monday evening. This marks the continuation of the team's partnership with Canine Companions, aiming to raise and train service dogs that will eventually assist individuals with disabilities.
Diamond's name was selected through a fan-driven contest held last month, where supporters chose from options like Diamond, Dinger, Double, Dugout, and DeLuna. The name "Diamond" emerged victorious, reflecting both the baseball diamond and the gem's representation of strength and resilience.
Over the next 18 months, Diamond will undergo training under the guidance of WEAR Guest Meteorologist Kathryn Daniel, a dedicated volunteer puppy raiser. Fans can look forward to seeing Diamond at Blue Wahoos Stadium throughout the season, as he embarks on his journey to become a fully trained service dog.
This initiative underscores the Blue Wahoos' commitment to community engagement and support for individuals with disabilities, fostering a deeper connection between the team and its fans.
In related news, Bubba, the team's previous service dog in training, has made significant strides in his development. After spending two years training at Blue Wahoos Stadium, Bubba has been accepted into the Hearing Dog Program at Canine Companions' Southeast Region Campus in Orlando. He is currently learning to alert to sounds such as doorbells and alarm clocks, skills essential for assisting individuals with hearing impairments.
