Petty Recalled as Reds Place Greene on IL

The Cincinnati Reds made several key roster moves on Friday, May 9, headlined by placing starting pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain. The move, retroactive to May 8, follows Greene’s early exit during Wednesday’s matchup against the Braves and was widely expected.

In a corresponding move, the Reds recalled right-hander Chase Petty from Triple-A Louisville. Petty made his MLB debut on April 30 against the Cardinals but was optioned back shortly after. He impressed in his return to Triple-A, tossing six no-hit innings, and now steps back into the big league rotation.

Petty is slated to start Sunday, May 11, in the series finale against the Astros, temporarily taking Andrew Abbott’s spot. After the team’s off day on Monday, the Reds are expected to reset their rotation, with Abbott, Nick Lodolo, Nick Martinez, and Brady Singer scheduled to pitch the next series.

The Reds also made changes to their outfield corps. Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise were optioned to Louisville, clearing room for the return of Austin Hays from the 10-day IL and the recall of Will Benson. Hays was activated on the first day he was eligible, returning from a hamstring strain. Benson, who last appeared for the Reds in early April, has been showing strong power numbers in Louisville with seven home runs and 13 extra-base hits.

As the Reds continue to battle injuries and look for consistency, Petty’s second opportunity in the majors could be pivotal — especially with Greene’s timeline to return still uncertain.
