Spartans Flip the Rankings

Detroit was loud.
Michigan State was louder.
In front of a packed crowd at Little Caesars Arena, No. 2 Michigan State took down No. 1 Michigan, 5–2, to win the 2026 Duel in the D and secure four out of six points in the rivalry series.
The Spartans keep the Iron D trophy in East Lansing for the third straight year — and with the win, they leapfrog Michigan into first place in the Big Ten standings with a slim one-point edge.
And this wasn’t a survive-and-escape type of win.
It was control.
Michigan State outshot the Wolverines 37–27, dictated pace, and went a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill against a Michigan power play that entered the night converting at 31%. That’s not luck. That’s structure and execution.
The puck movement told the story. MSU’s defense consistently stretched the ice with long breakout passes, catching Michigan flat-footed in transition. In the offensive zone, crisp seam passes carved through coverage and forced Michigan to chase.
Under head coach Adam Nightingale, the Spartans are now 7-3-1 against No. 1 ranked teams — and that’s not a coincidence either.
No. 2 walked into Detroit.
Outplayed No. 1.
And left in first place.
Spartans own the D.
