The NTT IndyCar Series made its first visit to Arlington, Texas on Sunday, and the debut of the new street circuit delivered an intense strategic battle that ultimately ended with Kyle Kirkwood standing on the top step of the podium.

Driving for Andretti Global, Kirkwood captured victory in the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington after a late-race duel with reigning champion Alex Palou. The win marks Kirkwood’s first of the 2026 season and vaults him into the early championship lead just three races into the year.

The 70-lap race unfolded on a 2.73-mile, 14-turn street circuit laid out around AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field, creating a unique urban backdrop for IndyCar’s newest event. From the start, the race was defined by varying pit strategies, tire management, and close battles among several front-running drivers.

Marcus Ericsson began the weekend strongly by securing his first career IndyCar pole position during qualifying, posting a lap nearly half a second quicker than Palou in the Firestone Fast Six session.

However, Sunday’s race quickly turned into a strategic chess match.

Ericsson led the opening stint ahead of Palou, but pit stop timing and strategy soon shuffled the order. Will Power briefly cycled into the lead by stretching his fuel window on an alternate strategy, while Palou appeared poised to control the race after building a gap in the middle stages.

The turning point came during the final round of pit stops.

Both Palou and Kirkwood dove into the pits on Lap 49, but a slow stop for the Andretti driver briefly put him at a disadvantage. When the pair returned to full speed, Palou held a small lead.

Kirkwood, however, had the pace.

Over the next few laps, the American driver steadily reeled in the three-time defending champion before launching a decisive move for the lead in Turn 13 on Lap 55. The pass was clean, aggressive, and ultimately race-winning.

Once in front, Kirkwood began to pull away and looked set for a comfortable finish before a late caution erased his advantage. A crash near pit exit with just two laps remaining brought out the race’s first full-course yellow, bunching the field for a final restart.

But Kirkwood managed the restart calmly and held his position as another incident deeper in the pack brought out a second yellow flag, allowing him to cruise to the checkered flag under caution.

Palou finished second, continuing his strong start to the season, while Will Power secured third place to complete a strong showing for Andretti-affiliated machinery. Ericsson, who started from pole, finished fourth, and Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five as the highest-placed Chevrolet driver.

The result marked a dominant day for Andretti Global, placing three cars inside the top four at the finish.

With the victory, Kirkwood now leads the championship standings early in the 18-race season, sitting ahead of Palou after three rounds.

The IndyCar Series now takes a brief pause before returning to action later this month at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, where the early championship battle will continue to take shape.
