Detroit Gets a PWHL Team!

It’s official. Detroit is getting a Professional Women’s Hockey League team.

After repeatedly proving that Detroit is a market for professional women’s hockey, the PWHL announced in May that Detroit would become its newest expansion city. PWHL Detroit will begin play during the 2026-27 season, with home games at Little Caesars Arena.

And honestly, it feels like this has been a long time coming.

Detroit has welcomed the PWHL from the beginning. The league played its first-ever neutral-site game at Little Caesars Arena in 2024, drawing 13,736 fans. Since then, the crowds have only gotten bigger. Detroit hosted four PWHL games across three seasons, including a record 15,938 fans in March 2026.

Now, fans won’t have to wait for the PWHL to come to town. They’ll finally have a team to call their own.

The arrival of PWHL Detroit is bigger than simply adding another team to the city. For the girls growing up playing hockey across Michigan, there is now a professional team in their backyard. There is a place to see the sport at its highest level, a team to cheer for and another path to dream about.

Detroit has always been Hockeytown. Now, women’s hockey officially has a home here, too.
