Spartans Sweep Notre Dame

No. 1 Michigan State took care of business at home, sweeping Notre Dame in a two-game Big Ten series at Munn Ice Arena.

The Spartans opened the weekend with a 4-2 win Thursday night before coming back Friday and putting together an offensive showcase, beating the Fighting Irish 8-2. The sweep moved Michigan State to 24-6-0 on the season and extended its winning streak against Notre Dame to 10 games.

Thursday’s opener was a tighter battle. Notre Dame tied the game twice, but Michigan State continued to find ways to answer. Trey Augustine was a huge part of the win, stopping 37 of 39 shots for a season-high in saves. The Spartans pulled away in the third period before adding an empty-net goal to secure the 4-2 victory.

Friday was a completely different story.

Michigan State scored four times in the second period and added three more in the third to turn the game into a rout. Porter Martone recorded his first career hat trick, while Ryker Lee scored twice as the Spartans put up a season-best eight goals.

The weekend sweep was another statement from a Michigan State team that continued to establish itself as one of the best teams in college hockey. With the regular season winding down, the Spartans were rolling at exactly the right time.
