MSU Well Represented at World Junior Showcase

Michigan State hockey continues to make its presence felt on the international stage.

Five Spartans were invited to participate in the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, giving them an opportunity to compete for a spot on Team USA’s roster for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Sophomore defenseman Sean Barnhill, incoming freshmen Jack Hextall, Chase Reid and Mason West, and junior forward Cullen Potter were among the 47 players invited to the showcase, which took place July 26 through Aug. 1 in Windsor, Ontario.

For Reid, the invitation added another chapter to an already impressive year. The defenseman was coming off a four-point performance in five games for Team USA at the 2026 World Junior Championship and was later selected seventh overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2026 NHL Draft.

The showcase also brought together several of the players who will make up Michigan State’s next roster. Hextall, Reid and West were all incoming freshmen, while Potter joined the Spartans after transferring from Arizona State.

Adding to the MSU presence was head coach Adam Nightingale, who served as head coach of Team USA, with associate head coach Jared DeMichiel joining his staff.

For a program that had already sent four players into the first round of the NHL Draft just days earlier, another strong showing on the international stage was another reminder of the talent being brought to East Lansing.

Michigan State is not just building a strong team. It is building a pipeline.
