Kim Shines in Debut, but Eagles Fall in Season Opener at Texas State

Eastern Michigan opened its 2025 football season on the road Saturday night, battling Texas State in a 52-27 defeat that showcased both bright spots and new beginnings for the Eagles.
Quarterback Noah Kim made his first start in green and white, throwing for 248 yards and a touchdown. The veteran signal-caller spread the ball effectively, connecting with Joshua Long for a 16-yard score late in the first half to pull the Eagles within one possession. Kim has now thrown touchdowns at three different programs, adding another layer to his collegiate journey.
The ground game also found rhythm, as Dontae McMillan delivered 113 all-purpose yards, including a team-best 78 on the ground, while Tavierre Dunlap and Joey Mattord each found the end zone. Dunlap’s touchdown carried extra meaning, coming in front of family and friends just 30 minutes from his hometown of Del Valle, Texas.
Defensively, Juan Salas Jr. paced the Eagles with seven tackles in his Division I debut, while Messiah Blair recorded his first career sack, forced fumble, and tackle for loss—all on the same play. Punter Mitchell Tomasek added his name to the record books, averaging 52.4 yards per kick, the best single-game mark in program history.
Though the Bobcats pulled away in the second half, Eastern leaves San Marcos with key contributors gaining valuable reps and new transfers finding their footing. The Eagles (0-1) will look to build on the offensive progress as they return home next week.
